A General Dentist Answers Questions About Dental Care and Technology

General DentistAs a general dentist, we believe in the importance of innovation and technology.  We also believe in the importance of education.  We take the time to get to know our patients, understand their concerns and provide comprehensive solutions in order to address them.  Thanks to modern technology what we can do has evolved, and we can help our patients to be more comfortable while the dental work is being completed.

During dental exams, we will evaluate what the issues are and present a variety of methods for addressing them.  Our patients regularly ask questions about what to expect during the exam, so here is what you need to know.

Dental tools have improved.

Many people have a vision of a general dentist running around with dental drills, scaring people.  Thanks to movies and cartoons this false image has been the brunt of many jokes.  It is not, however, a reality.  Dental tools have improved greatly, and they are now quieter, smaller, and gentler than they used to be.  As a result, we can complete procedures with more accuracy and make it possible for only the damaged or infected area to be treated, rather than impacting more of the surrounding tooth or tissue.

Imaging is more accurate.

We are now able to take more accurate images of the mouth. By seeing the exact spot that is infected or damaged, we can make a precise plan for how to correct it.  The better we can see inside of the mouth, the more accurate the procedure will be.  With new imaging techniques, procedures can be performed more accurately and with little to no irritation of the surrounding tissue or teeth.

Pain is but a distant memory.

In our general dentist office, we offer sedation so that our patients can feel comfortable while dental work is being performed.  Often, this involves calming the nerves and eliminating any dental anxiety that a person is feeling.  Other times this involves medication, and when oral surgery is being performed, a patient may even be put to sleep.  Since there are so many options to choose from, we recommend visiting our office for a consultation and discussing any concerns that you have.  We can then make suggestions on how to proceed in order to keep you comfortable and pain-free.

Restorations look natural.

We can now complete restorations like crowns and fillings using tooth-colored materials.  This way if you have a cavity that is being treated or need to have a root canal, the material used to restore the tooth structure can look completely natural.  It will blend in with the surrounding teeth so that it is impossible to tell which teeth are completely natural and which ones have been treated in our general dentistry office.  If you have gotten silver amalgam restorations in the past, we can replace them so that you can smile with confidence. Our goal is to help our patients stay healthy and look fantastic at the same time.  Natural looking restorations make this possible.
