A Port Hueneme Dentist Answers Questions About Dental Care

Port Hueneme dentistAs a Port Hueneme dentist, we know how important preventative dental care is to the overall health of our patients.  Yes, you can wait until you have a toothache to come in, but this will only create discomfort that you don't need to have in the first place.  If you visit our dental office for regular and ongoing care, we can help you to prevent gum disease and cavities.  This way you can enjoy life without the interruption of an oral health issue.

When you visit our dental office, we will also take the time to make suggestions about healthy eating, how to brush properly, etc.  Our team is also happy to answer any questions that you may have about dental care or oral health in general.  Here are some of the questions that we hear on a regular basis -

How often should I visit the dentist?

We would prefer to see you in our Port Hueneme dentist office two times per year.  This will give you your best shot at remaining cavity and infection free.  If, however, your time is limited, you should visit us at least once per year.  Anything less exposes you to the risk of oral health problems. We also want to warn you that if you are a diabetic with uncontrolled blood sugar, you should come in more frequently.

As a Port Hueneme dentist, can you treat my entire family?

We would be happy to. In fact, we suggest it because we can schedule everyone for an appointment at the same time. We try to make it as easy as possible.

When should I come in if my tooth starts to hurt?

Immediately, after brushing your teeth, that is.  A lot of times, a toothache will start because food is stuck in between the teeth. Otherwise, you may have a cavity or an infection in your dental pulp that requires immediate treatment.  Since cavities will typically not hurt immediately, by the time you reach the stage of discomfort, a dental appointment will be necessary.  We can remove the decayed portion of your tooth and place a filling to restore it.  If the infection is in the dental pulp, we may need to perform a root canal instead.

What do I do if my filling or crown becomes loose?

Visit our office so that we can replace or restore it.  The problem with a loose crown is that it creates an opening for bacteria.  If bacteria become trapped in between your crown and tooth, it can cause an infection and severe discomfort.  By replacing your crown immediately, we can prevent any unnecessary irritation.

Can you fix my damaged tooth in your Port Hueneme dentist office?

Yes, if you have cracked or chipped your tooth we can restore it.  Our restorations correct both the form and function of your tooth which means that you will be able to use it like normal and that your tooth will look natural once we are done.
