Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

You might find yourself wondering why your dentist wants to extract your wisdom teeth even though they are not causing any pain or discomfort. The wisdom teeth are the third set of molars, and they typically emerge around the ages of 17-25.

The location of wisdom teeth (at the back of the mouth) makes them a lot more difficult to clean than more accessible teeth. It makes wisdom teeth more vulnerable to tooth decay and infection, and they can also lead to the same on the teeth closest to them. The back molars are also more likely to develop issues during their growth.

This article will look at some of the benefits of having a wisdom tooth removed before it leads to more severe problems:

Why some dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth

A wisdom tooth not causing any pain does not mean it is healthy. It could be impacted, meaning it is unable to break through the jaw into the mouth. This might be caused by a person's mouth being too small and not having enough space for all their teeth. The tooth could be growing at an odd angle that is obstructed by another tooth. Such an impacted tooth can end up damaging the tooth in its path.

Generally speaking, the younger a person is the easier it is to extract one of their teeth. This is due to the fact bones become harder as one gets older, making it harder to remove teeth.

Waiting to have a tooth extracted can lead to complications like fractured teeth, a minor loss of jaw mobility, numbness and heavy bleeding.

When is an extraction necessary?

X-rays can sometimes indicate if a wisdom tooth has already developed a problem or if it needs to be immediately extracted. Common reasons why a dentist might recommend removing a tooth include:

  • It is damaging nearby teeth: A wisdom tooth pushing on other teeth nearby can lead to toothaches and bite issues
  • Jaw damage: A problematic wisdom tooth can lead to the formation of cysts around teeth. This can lead to nerve damage and hollow out a person's teeth when left untreated
  • Sinus problems: Issues with the third set of molars can lead to congestion, pressure and sinus pain
  • Inflamed gums: A defective wisdom tooth can irritate the surrounding gum tissue and lead to inflammation
  • Cavities: The location of wisdom teeth makes them more challenging to clean, making them more vulnerable to decay. The inflammation caused by an impacted wisdom tooth can also lead to gum disease
  • Poor alignment: When an impacted tooth crowds the surrounding ones, they typically become misaligned.

The dentist will decide if a patient should extract their wisdom teeth by evaluating the position of the tooth, the patient's age and the shape of their mouth.
